Funds will help train preventive medicine physicians
NEWS IN BRIEF — Posted Aug. 9, 2010
The Health Resources and Services Administration has allocated $9 million to train physicians in preventive medicine.
The money will help create new residency programs in preventive medicine, expand existing programs and provide financial support to residents at 15 medical schools, schools of public health and hospitals. A list of the awards announced July 23 is available online (link).
Nearly $6.7 million of the funds came from $200 million appropriated to HRSA under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to address health care work force shortages.
"Preventive medicine physicians have training in both clinical medicine and public health, giving them a unique understanding of how to reduce the risks of disease and disability for the increasing number of people in need," Dept. of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.
