159th AMA Annual Meeting
Delegates chose Peter W. Carmel, MD, a pediatric neurosurgeon, as AMA president-elect. Congratulating him after the election were his wife (on left), Jacqueline A. Bello, MD, an alternate delegate for the American Society of Neuroradiology; and colleague Monica C. Wehby, MD, a delegate for the American Assn. of Neurological Surgeons. "I pledge to serve as a strong voice and dedicated advocate for patients and physicians on the pressing issues confronting our health care system," Dr. Carmel said. Health system reform has been an ongoing struggle, he said earlier, during the candidates' debate. "For many of us, this past year has felt like one long government mugging. We did right by our patients." Dr. Carmel is from New York with a practice in Newark, N.J. He has been a member of the House of Delegates for 17 years. He was first elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.
