This photo "happened in front of me when I happened to have a camera in hand," says Dr. Miller, who snapped the shot of an Afghan girl having her wrist examined as worried relatives look on. "Taking photos is a way of distancing yourself from the action," says Dr. Miller, who also has shot pictures through an open Black Hawk helicopter window. "While looking at the photos later can bring the observer very close to the action, when the action is surrounding you, being behind the lens is an insulating factor."
